DID YOU KNOW?

Each day 10,000 humans are born in the U.S., and each day 70,000 puppies and kittens are born.  As long as these birth rates exist, there will never be enough homes for all the animals.  As a result, millions of healthy, loving cats ,dogs, kittens and puppies face early death as a form of animal control.  Others are left to fend for themselves against automobiles, the elements, and cruel humans.  What can you do to stop the suffering?  Spay and neuter your pets!

Spay and Neuter BEFORE AND Aftercare

BEFORE SURGERY

  • Remove all food after midnight the night before sedation (water is allowed). Keep your pet confined so that he/she cannot get anything to eat.
  • Pets should be brought to the clinic under control. Dogs should be on a leash. Cats should be in a carrier.

AFTER SURGERY

  • Dogs should be kept inside and quiet for 14 days or long if in heat. Any female spayed during heat will continue to show signs of heat for several days and will attract males, she should be kept inside and away from male dogs until symptoms subside. Cats should be kept inside and quiet for 14 days. Cats new to your household should be kept inside for 3-4 weeks.
  • The place where you keep your pets should be clean and dry.
  • Dogs must be walked on a leash. They must not be allowed to roam free. Do not pen or chain your dog outside.

FEEDING

  • Your pet may feel nausea and the "stomach" will feel sensitive due to the residual effects of anesthesia. You may offer a teaspoon of food and wait 30 to 45 minutes to be sure nausea does not occur. If your pet refuses to eat, you may want to encourage it with strong smelling canned food or boneless/skinless chicken. Puppies, kittens, small or underweight animals may be prone to low blood sugar. You may also offer small amounts of water or have a pet lick ice cubes, as excessive drinking may cause your pet to vomit. The effects of anesthesia should have worn off by the next day. If your puppy or kitten has not eaten by the following morning, please call or bring them to the clinic.

STITCHES

  • Male cats do not require stitch  removal unless crypt-orchid surgery was done.
  • Dogs and female cats should return to the clinic in 14 days for the removal of stitches. No appointment needed.
  • Keep your pet from excessively licking, scratching or otherwise disturbing the incision. An elizbethan style collar, which can be purchased at the clinic, may be needed.
  • Your pet may have some swelling under the stitches. Any swelling which is draining or exceptionally large should be checked at Animal Aid.
  • If you want to bathe your pet before the stitches are removed, apply petroleum jelly to the incision first to protect it.

PROBLEMS

  • Please monitor your pets incision site for any  problems, and if you need help , please call our office at  (850) 386-4148.
  •  After hours please contact Allied Veterinary Emergency Animal Hospital at (850) 222-0123, or Northwood Animal Hospital at (850) 385-8181
